BOSTON, MA – Congressman Stephen F. Lynch (D-Boston) recently announced that Seoyeon Kim of Braintree won this year’s Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery,” in the Eighth Congressional District of Massachusetts.
The annual art competition is open to all high school students across the country. The winning piece of artwork from each Congressional District is selected to hang in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. for one year.
This year, 13 young artists from across the Eighth Congressional District submitted artwork. Entries included photographs, paintings, pencil sketchings, and collages, among other mediums.
The judges selected a piece entitled “My Pursuit” by Seoyeon Kim, a junior at CATS Academy Boston in Braintree. The judges noted that Seoyeon’s artwork, created using ink, sand, and acrylic, incorporated a self-portrait alongside a skillful rendering of clock gears and the cosmos. The judges highlighted that it was imaginative, creative, and a nice mixture of realism and abstraction. Seoyeon’s artwork will be flown to Washington, D.C. where it will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol.
“Seoyeon Kim is a wonderfully gifted young artist,” said Congressman Lynch. “Her artwork is a reflection of her talent and hard work and I congratulate her on this exciting achievement. I hope that Seoyeon’s success will encourage other students from Braintree and across the Eighth District to continue their pursuit of the arts.”
Congressman Lynch added, “We have a number of gifted artists in the Eighth Congressional District. No doubt, their ability is due in part to the support of their dedicated parents and their extraordinary art teachers.”
